Charts – 27 October 2023

Posted on Monday, October 30, 2023 by Paul in Music

This is a very quiet week for new entries.

1. Kenya Grace – “Strangers”

But first, a third week at number 1 for Kenya Grace, still with a razor-thin margin over “Prada” by cassö at number 2.

9. The Kid Laroi, Jung Kook & Central Cee – “Too Much”

Now that’s an unusual combination – and no, Central Cee isn’t just doing a guest verse for the UK release. He’s been having international success for a while, and this is his third top ten hit in Australia. Between the three singers it covers enough bases to make it a natural hit, though the record itself is… well, kind of meh? Justin Bieber has a songwriting credit on it, apparently because it was originally going to be a Kid Laroi/Bieber single. Mind you, eight other people also have songwriting credits on this, and it sounds like it.

Apparently nobody felt like going up against this single, though, and so the only other new entry in the top 40 is a record that climbs into the top 40 after spending two weeks at 41.

36. Tems – “Me & U”

The first solo hit for Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, although she’s had featured singer credits on a couple of top 20 hits before. The track itself was recorded back in 2021, at which point Drake was going to be on hit. You can kind of hear the echoes of a Drake track in here, but it’s a lot better than anything he’s put out lately.

And that’s your lot. Actually, I say nobody else tried releasing a single this week, but “In the City” by Charli XCX & Sam Smith enters at number 41, no doubt to much gnashing of teeth within the label. Maybe next week?

This week’s climbers:

  • “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift rebounds from 14 to 3, apparently because of the publicity for her concert film. It’s already spent 13 weeks in the top 10 in its current run, peaking at number 2.
  • “Stick Season” by Noah Kahan climbs 18-9 to give him his first top 10 hit.
  • “One of Your Girls” by Troye Sivan climbs 17-11. He’s only had one bigger hit, and that was as a guest singer for Lauv.
  • “Rich Baby Daddy” by Drake featuring Sexxy Red & SZA actually climbs 21-17 in its second week on the chart. As for the other two Drake album tracks, “IDGAF” falls 10-16, and “First Person Shooter” falls 13-21, so apparently this one might have some traction of its own.
  • “Liquor & Cigarettes” by Chase & Status and Hedex featuring ArrDee climbs 23-20. Chase & Status still have “Baddadan” in the top 10, falling to 6 this week; meanwhile, “Disconnect” finally drops out of the top 20.
  • “I Remember Everything” by Zach Bryan featuring Kacey Musgraves climbs 26-22.
  • “Pompeii” by Bastille, which re-entered at 37 last week on the back of a new version being released, climbs to 26.
  • “Agora Hills” by Doja Cat, which entered at number 29 four weeks ago, dropped out of the top 40 two weeks ago, and re-entered at 40 last week, has an unexpected resurgence, climbing 40-28.
  • “On My Love” by Zara Larsson & David Guetta, which had been hovering around the number 40 mark, unexpectedly climbs 38-29.
  • “Would You (Go to Bed With Me)” by Campbell & Alcemist climbs 35-33.

There are two new entries this week, plus another re-entry for Rema’s “Calm Down” at number 39, as it continues to hover around the number 40 mark. The three records making room for them:

  • “3D” by Jung Kook featuring Jack Harlow, which peaked at 5 but only lasted three weeks in the top 40.
  • “Got Me Started” by Troye Sivan, which has been hovering in and out of the top 40 and peaked at 34.
  • “Darkside” by Bring Me The Horizon got a single week at number 31.

On the album chart:

1. The Rolling Stones – “Hackney Diamonds”

The single “Angry” reached number 34. This is their 24th studio album and their 14th number one. The band now consists of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, who have a combined age of 235.

2. Blink 182 – “One More Time”

The title track reached number 28. It’s their sixth top ten album; the previous one got to number 6, but they got their only number 1 album as recently as 2016.

3. Bombay Bicycle Club – “My Big Day”

Their fifth top ten album; they haven’t missed the top ten since their debut in 2010 (which didn’t even make the album top 40). As for the single above, I must admit I was hoping for more fireworks for something listed as “Tekken 2 (featuring Chaka Khan)”, but it did grow on me.

12. Barry Can’t Swim – “When Will We Land”

He’s a producer from Edinburgh, a city which really does punch well below its weight where popular music is concerned. Debut album.

15. Richard Hawley – “Now Then – The Very Best of Richard Hawley”

Compilation. He’s had four top tens with studio albums, so number 15 for a best of is fair enough.

21. Sampha – “Lahai”

Much-delayed follow-up to his 2017 album “Process”, which won the Mercury Music Prize. That album got to number 7, so this is a definite step down.

25. Pet Shop Boys – “Relentless”

This is a little unusual – a freestanding 30th anniversary reissue for the bonus disc from their album “Very”, which consisted of mostly of dance instrumentals. It’s the only Pet Shop Boys album where Chris Lowe is listed ahead of Neil Tennant in the songwriting credits. This was during the brief period where they started wearing weird costumes and doing CGI videos.

28. NSG – “Area Boyz”

London Afroswing group. It’s their debut album, although a mixtape previously got to 37.

Bring on the comments

  1. Douglas says:

“3D”‘s very rapid drop out of the charts (as compared to “Seven”, which lasted for 10 weeks) isn’t just explicable by the fact that “Seven” is a good song and “3D” is not. (Although “Seven” is a good song and “3D” is not.)

There was at least some resistance from the fanbase to the fratty, sleazy lyrics and tone of Jack Harlow’s verse. ARMY devotion isn’t UNCONDITIONAL devotion; it’s tied in part to upholding a particular style and image.
