Charts – 24 July 2011

Posted on Monday, July 25, 2011 by Paul in Music

First things first: there is no Amy Winehouse on this week’s chart.  The chart week runs from Sunday through to Saturday, and so the inevitable posthumous sales rush won’t make its presence felt until next week.  As of right now, it looks like she could well top the album charts, and land “Back to Black” inside the top 10.

But there is no Amy Winehouse on this week’s chart.  Nor is there much else.

The Wanted spend a second week at number one with “Glad You Came”, heading up a completely static top five.  There are several climbers, but it’s mostly rebounds from songs that have been around forever; the only vaguely notable one is Enrique Iglesias’ “Dirty Dancer” climbing eleven places to number 21.  And there are three new entries, all outside the top twenty.

So this week’s highest new entry “Down With The Trumpets” by Rizzle Kicks, a pair of teenage rappers from Bristol who get their first hit.  Their YouTube channel is full of them rapping over unlikely samples or just over the top of other people’s records – some of which are very good, actually.  (The Lily Allen one’s great.)  This track is moving more into live band territory, though.

This has been out for four weeks, so its sudden leap to number 22 is a little odd.  It might be something to do with the release of the video for their implausible upcoming collaboration with X-Factor runner-up Olly Murs, “Heart Skips A Beat”.  That isn’t out yet, so the added promotion might have spilled over to their own record.  The Olly Murs single is unexpectedly acceptable, by the way.  But I’m sure it’ll chart in time anyway, so here’s an earlier Rizzle Kicks single instead.

This week’s other two new entries are both Tinie Tempah collaborations.  Number 35 is “Till I’m Gone” by Tinie Tempah featuring Wiz Khalifa, which is actually a bonus track from the American version of his album, though it’s apparently going to be put on his second album in Britain.  It’s a safe radio choice, let’s be blunt.  And number 39 is “Hitz” by Chase & Status featuring Tinie Tempah, which is a bit more like it (and a change of pace for Chase & Status, who usually release their epics as singles).
