Charts – 28 April 2023
1. Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding – “Miracle”
Well, I told you that Lewis Capaldi’s “Wish You The Best” only got to number 1 on the strength of first-week sales of the pre-ordered CD single. And as predicted, he doesn’t manage a second week at number one, so “Miracle” returns for its third. Not that “Wish You The Best” collapses – it’s at a very respectable number 3, with “Forget Me” also still in the top 10. And “Miracle” is very lucky to get that third week – it beats David Kushner’s “Daylight” by the equivalent of 267 sales, which is coin-toss territory.
11. Nines – “Tony Soprano 2”
Nines has previously been one of those rappers who does much better on the album chart. His two previous top 40 singles were “I See You Shining” (number 37 in 2018) and “Airplane Mode” (number 25 in 2020). But his last three albums all made the top 5, and the most recent was a number 1. This is the lead single from his next album. Nicely shot video.
14. The Weeknd featuring Future – “Double Fantasy”
This is the lead single from a new Weeknd album. Admittedly, the album in question is the soundtrack to his HBO series The Idol, which might be seen as a side project of sorts. But the Weeknd has always been more notable for his staying power than for his high first week sales – this is a fairly standard entry point for him, and he has a tendency to stick around for a long, long time.
21. HSTikkyTokky & General G – “Twust”
Dear god. We live in a world where TikTok fitness influencer HSTikkyTokky has had two top 40 hit singles. And the last one only got to number 37, so what does that tell you about the direction of civilisation? General G, as best as I can figure out, is basically a hanger on. Apparently they’ve had a falling out over a girl, so that’s tremendously exciting. Oddly, the actual backing track on this is pretty good.
35. Raye – “Flip a Switch”
Ah. This is the first time we’ve seen Raye since her number 1 “Escapism”. There’s already been a follow-up single: “Ice Cream Man”, which peaked at number 69 in February. That’s crash-and-burn territory, unfortunately. At the moment, “Flip a Switch” is an album track, but it’s being promoted as a single in the remix above, with a verse by Coi Leray.
“Escapism” is still on the top 40, rebounding to 26 this week.
36. Tyler, The Creator featuring Kali Uchis – “See You Again”
We had Tyler a couple of weeks ago when “Dogtooth” reached number 39. This is not the follow-up – it’s a track from four years ago that’s been dusted off by TikTok. Kali Uchis gets her first top 40 credit, after getting to number 41 with “Telepatia” in 2021.
37. Kim Petras & Nicki Minaj – “Alone”
Strike Kim Petras off the one-hit-wonders list, then – by the skin of her teeth. The hook is lifted from, of all things, “Better Off Alone”, a number 2 hit in 1999 credited to “DJ Jürgen presents Alice Deejay”. Several more hits followed which did not require Jürgen’s presentational skills.
This week’s climbers:
- “Daylight” by David Kushner climbs 3-2.
- “React” by Switch Disco & Ella Henderson climbs 12-8.
- “Cupid” by Fifty Fifty climbs 26-18. It’s an actual crossover hit.
- “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” by David Guetta, Anne-Marie & Coi Leray climbs 23-19.
- “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen climbs 31-28.
The six tracks leaving the top 40:
- “Sure Thing” by Miguel, which got as far as 4 on its viral revival.
- “Never Felt So Alone” by Labrinth, after a single week at 33.
- “Ceilings” by Lizzy McAlpine, which reached number 6.
- “I’m Good (Blue)” by David Guetta & Bebe Rexha, which had a week at number 1 and 30 weeks in the top 40 (either side of Christmas).
- “Snooze” by SZA, which peaked at 36.
- “Creepin'” by Metro Boomin, the Weeknd & 21 Savage, which peaked at 7.
The album chart is very busy this week.
1. Enter Shikari – “A Kiss for the Whole World”
Well, these guys have mellowed a lot since their early albums. It’s their seventh studio album and their first number 1, but they’ve had six albums in the top 10 and the last one got to number 2, so it’s not a huge surprise that they get there in the end. Their live album “Live at Alexandra Palace 3” enters at number 15.
2. The 1975 – “Live with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra”
Official release for a live show they did for the BBC at Blackpool Tower Ballroom in 2016.
3. Everything But The Girl – “Fuse”
Reunion album – the duo haven’t released an album together in 24 years. Number 3 is their highest ever album chart position, marginally beating 1996’s “Walking Wounded”.
4. Taylor Swift – “Folklore – The Long Pond Studio Sessions”
This is the soundtrack of the lockdown-era concert film from 2020; it’s been re-issued on vinyl for Record Store Day.
17. Jethro Tull – “RökFlöte”
Their 23rd album – the last one made the top 10 but this is still very respectable. Apparently the title is some kind of hangover from an original concept of making an album of instrumental flute music.
25. Post Malone – “The Diamond Collection”
Compilation album. The token new track, “Chemical”, reached number 11.
30. Songer – “Skala”
He’s a rapper from Reading, and this is his first chart appearance. He’s good.
34. Tiesto – “Drive”
Well, he’s not exactly an albums artist, and this is mainly a collection of singles anyway. The current one is “10:34.”
“Reunion” is amazing choice of words for EBTG considering that they married each other during those 24 years!
Very happy for Fifty Fifty, Cupid is a pretty cute song. Lovin’ Me is still my favorite from them though. I’m curious how this international success will translate into domestic success but at least they should nab a nice following.
