House To Astonish Episode 56
Right, now that we finally have the site back up (thanks, possibly, Dreamhost!) we can get this show on the road. We’ve got a new episode of the podcast for you, where we’re talking about Julie Taymor’s exit from the Spider-Man musical, Robert Kirkman and Rob Liefeld’s new book, Jeff Smith’s Rasl heading to Hollywood and Roger Langridge’s Muppet Show languishing in Limbo. We’ve also got reviews of Sigil, Venom and… erm… Sarah Palin vs the World, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe gets square eyes. All this plus cardboard trees, waggly tongue dribble action and learning Greek on an aeroplane.
The podcast is here, or on Mixcloud here. Let us know what you think, either in the comments below, on Twitter, via email or on our Facebook fan page.
I think there actually is supposed to be a Bone movie in production. Warner Bros own the rights, but there doesn’t seem to be any updates in the last two years.
If I remember correctly, Thundersword is meant to be a parody of Steve Gerber.
“Thunder!!”
(Cue: Guitar-riff of four-letter band named after electricity)
On the other hand, this character is so cool, he doesn’t need a theme to play when he makes his entrance…
Surely one of the judges for the BBC Spider-Man talent show would be Nicholas Hammond? Not only was he Spider-Man, but he’s got musical experience too. And probably needs the work.
I could see Bone working as live action, with the Bone cousins as animated, Roger Rabbit style.
Paul O’BRIEN! “Treat it as a ‘seeg’?” Tut tut! For shame!
Inception was anything but intelligent science fiction. Look at the script with even the slightest bit of scrutiny and the whole thing falls apart.
I suspect one of the judges for With Great Power… would be Stan Lee, the BBC being under the mistaken impression that this would give it credibility with comics fans.
He’d do it, too.
Incidentally, the Edinburgh Tram Project game has appeared in The Sunday Post, when Edinburgh Zoo got a pair of pandas. “What rare sight will we see first in the capital, a baby panda? Or a tram?”
On the Sarah Palin front, she’s different because usually, losing VP candidates fade into obscurity. Just in recent memory, Geraldine Ferraro, Lloyd Bentsen, and Jack Kemp are all pretty much unknown outside diehard political circles. Joe Lieberman and John Edwards only kept any name value because they ran for President again in ’08. A losing VP candidate hanging around as a top-tier political story is a new thing in American politics.
Jesse: That’s because people want to fuck her, which is, unfortunately, not the case with Joe Lieberman.
And yes, Thundersword was Shooter’s rip on Steve Gerber.
No, no, I’d say that’s very fortunate about Lieberman.
Re: Jack O’Lantern:
Spider-Nerd to the rescue! Jason Macendale was indeed first introduced as the pumpkin-headed fiend, containing no particular connection to Hobgoblin or any other goblin. He was simply a mercinary.
However, after continually getting his head kicked in by Spider-Man (and others), he hired the Foreigner to assassinate (who he thought was) the Hobgoblin, simply to get the better gear and rep that comes along with that name.
Which isn’t a bad idea, actually. Very practical.
However, Macendale was always a chump and a loser. And nothing — becoming Hobgoblin, becoming half-demon, becoming a cyborg (yes, these all happened) — stopped him from getting his head kicked in by Spider-Man. He was finally killed when the original Hobgoblin came back to reclaim his place.
JM DeMatteis introduced a new Jack a bit later who appear to have mystical powers. I believe this was later retconned away into being Mysterio-like hallucinations and special effects.
A quick Wikipedia check reveals that this new Jack was introduced in Dark Reign: Made Men, and does in fact have demonic powers.
Spider-Nerd out!!
