Charts – 27 February 2011

Posted on Monday, February 28, 2011 by Paul in Music

Don’t get too settled.  This won’t take long.  It’s a very quiet week on the singles chart, with a largely static top ten and only one significant new entry.

“Someone Like You” by Adele holds at number 1 for the second week.  Interestingly, according to the iTunes chart, the original studio recording is now outselling the Brit Awards version that catapulted her to the top in the first place.  It doesn’t look like any of this week’s new releases are posing much of a threat either, though it’s too early in the week to predict anything with confidence, given what happened on the previous two charts.

The highest new entry is “Good Girl” by Alexis Jordan at number 6.  She’s a former contestant on America’s Got Talent, though if her Wikipedia entry is anything to be believed, she’s actually having more commercial success in the UK and Australia.  This is the follow-up to “Happiness”, which made number 3 in November and has only just left the chart.  It’s another Stargate production, though “Happiness” was so heavily based on a Deadmau5 sample that you wouldn’t have known it.  “Good Girl” is an entirely above average pop song, as you’d expect from those producers, and it bubbles along nicely enough, but it doesn’t strike me as a stand out song that’s likely to match the staying power of “Happiness”.

And that’s the only new entry in the top 20.  Below that point, there’s the usual mix of oddities and singles which have only just started their promotion.

Number 22 is “Singing in the Rain/Umbrella” by the Glee Cast featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, which is, shall we say, not one of the show’s more successful mash-ups.  Actually, let’s be blunt, it’s pretty much horrific.  Nonetheless, it’s the highest chart place for a Glee single since “Total Eclipse of the Heart” last May, so somebody must like it.  The Glee Cast (complete with added Paltrow) also show up at 32 with “Forget You”, because I think we can all agree that if there’s one thing the Cee Lo Green original was missing, it’s Gwyneth Paltrow.  (Presumably thanks to a combination of Glee and the Brit Awards performance from the previous week, the Cee Lo Green original climbs back to 14.)

Number 23 is “The Last Dance” by Claire Maguire, the first full-scale single release from yet another hotly tipped songwriter who coincidentally happens to have an album coming out at the start of the year.  (Why, it’s almost as if people compile these “artists to watch in 2011” lists by flicking through the release schedules…)  It’s a sort of eighties soft rock ballad given a modern production polish, which kind of works.

Number 34 is “Never Say Never” by Justin Bieber featuring Jaden Smith, the promotional single for Bieber’s film.  I assume it’s going to go further, and to be honest, it’s less objectionable than a lot of his records.  It’s also the chart debut for Will Smith’s other spawn, and something tells me this is just going to be the first stage of the promotional campaign where his career is concerned.

Finally, 36 is “C’Mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise)”, credited to the unwieldy combination of Tiesto v. Diplo featuring Busta Rhymes, which has been climbing from the lower reaches for a couple of weeks already.  Sounds to me pretty much like a Tiesto single with rapping over the top.  Still, it’s the first top 40 hit for the produced and noted Blackberry enthusiast Diplo, whose records are usually a bit more interesting than this one.  (Try “Hold The Line” by his side project Major Lazer, or the fabulously insane “Smash a Kangaroo”.)

Other climbers this week: “S&M” by Rihanna is up to 3, “F–kin’ Perfect” by Pink! reaches 10, and “Kidz” by Take That reaches 28.
