Last Week (And The Week Before) In Comics

Posted on Monday, October 5, 2009 by Al in Uncategorized

Evening all, how are you? You look great! Smashing.

I’m back from my holidays, and there’s a ridiculously big pile of comics to review, so for this week only, we’re going to try something a bit different – reviews in haiku form. Haikviews, if you will. Anyway. On with it!

RUNAWAYS 14

Wow, just… really, wow.
I did not see that coming
Which is ironic.

SHANG-CHI, MASTER OF KUNG FU

This book is crazy.
Crazy in a good way, though.
Kung-Fu Motorbikes!

THE WEB 1

Exposition yay!
Leonardi-esque artwork.
Better than The Shield.

UNDERGROUND 1

Jeff Parker writing,
Steve Lieber on art duties…
Just buy it, OK?

SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN 1

Thousandth retelling,
Starring Young Christopher Reeve
As a bobblehead.

DETECTIVE COMICS 857

Gorgeous art again
Plus a heck of an ending.
Backup strip good too.

DARK X-MEN: THE CONFESSION

X-Leaders spill beans;
Their mutant power is chat.
Can we move on now?

X-FACTOR 49

Gay jokes and plot twists
To cut a long story short…
Yeah, too late for that.

AVENGERS INITIATIVE 28

Gage is on form here.
New Warriors fans take heed:
Really cool last page.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 606-607

Spidey and Black Cat
Have romantic interlude.
Diablo is lame.

INCREDIBLE HERCULES 135

Amadeus Cho
Fights Pythagoras Dupree.
This book is awesome.

SPIDER-WOMAN 1

Story is a drag
Art is really lovely, though.
Cover? Ludicrous.

So, that was what I read. And you?

Bring on the comments

  1. I read COMIX TELFORD, the anthology of strips from the Telford chapter of Hi8us Midlands’ StripSearch programme, mediated by John McCrea, Andi Watson, etc..

There is an artist in here who is, let me not understate it, the next Charles Vess.

  2. Al says:

    Really? Superb. What’s their name?

  3. He’s called Mark Porter. He’s older than some of the other kids – and they were kids! – in the book. He must be in his mid-twenties. No web presence that I can find.

Man alive, though. That much talent! The sod!

  4. That must have taken you ages to do the haikus, Al. Worth it though.

  5. mark coale says:

although I enjoy the podcasts, I don’t often remember what has been reviewed long after listening.

Have you guys done any of the Jason Aaron Ghost Rider stuff in the pod? I find it campy good, especially the motely crew of baddies being assmebled.

  6. arseface says:

    OK, that was fun
But too much was glossed over
    No more haikus please

  7. Excellent! Very unique reviews, and quite creative. Enjoyed.

  8. Al says:

I don’t think we’ve covered Aaron’s GR on the podcast, but I certainly reviewed the first issue of Heaven’s On Fire here a few weeks back.

    As for the reviews
    Haiku is way too taxing
    I’ll stop with these ones.

  9. Michael Aronson says:

    No more haikus, please.
    Completely unsubstantial.
    And pretty lazy.

  10. Al says:

Sorry, I obviously haven’t been holding up my end of our contract.

  11. Air that squeaks gently
As the mouse that lost to rat.
    Women also fart.

  12. Michael Aronson says:

    Because I don’t pay,
    I guess I shouldn’t expect
    Quality reviews?
