House to Astonish Episode 22
After last episode’s Cannonball Run of mishap and misery, this week’s podcast was a much smoother recording experience, so it should hopefully be a much smoother listening experience for all you people out there in listeningland.
This time round, we’ve got the usual news roundup including a whole heck of a lot of time spent on the solicitations, reviews of 2000AD, King City and Fantastic Four, and the Official Handbook gets religion. Also featuring comics numbered on the basis of smell, the cutting edge music tastes of DC Comics and supervillain pundits on Fox News.
It’s available to download here, and as always you can stream it off the website or grab it from iTunes. Let us know what you reckon, whether by comment, email, twitter message, or semaphore signal.
Unadvertised musical number too, bonus!
Encore! Encore!
One of my Brummie superhero characters is a Christian superhero called, aha, “Mister Christian.” Literal Power of Prayer. I’ve only had the time to do one short scene with him, though. I could see the Redeemer/Rock/Illuminator Cliff-’em-Up causing some major contrafibularities, though. Imagine the confusion when the Cross-Men come up against the X-Men!
Wally the Wizard was renamed W_I_lly the Wizard when it was reprinted in the pages of…Spidey Super Stories? I remember that was the point when I realised that I could quit Spider-Man. Anyway, crazy old thing, replacing one mild insult with a phallic euphemism.
Planet Terry was a funny old strip. You could do a fair nisei manga revival of it – and Wa/illy The Wizard – if you wanted to.
King City vol 1 was brilliant – Graham’s girls are phenomenal. I’d kill to be draw a woman half that cute. Damned if I’m paying for it twice, though. Will it be collected in a 12-issue omnibus? Two 6-issue trades? I wish I could know in advance, so that I can decide whether or not to buy the second half in comic form.
The Way/Robertson Dethlok was the victim of some sort of office thing, I think. Something to do with content, possibly.
Fantastic Four…Authority…not gonna flog that horse again.
Happy Hols, Paul!

Didn’t Way get a MAX Ant-Man (With Clayton “X-Force” Crain) series canned as well, after he gave a blatantly drunken interview to the Pulse where he said he didn’t care about it all?
Of course, the most popular of the Star Comics line was Peter Porker, Spider-Ham, who has been seen several times since then.
And Al, you do have a lovely singing voice.
The Uncanny X-Cast did it, now you have to do it: an all-musical House to Astonish!
Art
can we get a breaking news podcast?
In two weeks time, this disney/marvel stuff will be so old and talked to death.
Not unless Paul can do it from New York, I’m afraid…!
Though Paul’s vacation obviously prevents him from rapid commentary, I wouldn’t mind hearing some of your first thoughts on this astounding breaking news, Al.
Hey, Al. Just want to say HtA is my favorite comics podcast and I appreciate the effort you and Paul put into it.
One quibble, and Paul has seemed to stopped doing this lately, but he is a bit repetitive in his rants. I think we heard the same theory on SDCC’s lack of comics news three times already. And I wish he’d give some of the DC titles (like the Superman books) a try instead of being entirely dismissive of it, but hey, everyone has their personal tastes. You are both insightful and entertaining and that is a lot more than most comics podcasts. Thanks.
Also, looking forward to the next episode and talks of Marvel/Disney.
