Charts – 17 January 2025
There were some new releases this week, but nobody’s very interested in those. Instead, let’s see what’s going viral from the back catalogue!
1. Gracie Abrams – “That’s So True”
But first: eight non-consecutive weeks for this. It’s clinging on by its fingertips, with a lead of less than 2% over Rosé and Bruno Mars at 2. The top 4 is all non-movers and to be honest there’s very little movement in the top 10 period.
25. Alex Warren – “Carry You Home”
First of all, a resurgence of interest in a minor hit from last autumn. This had a four week run in the chart, peaking at number 32. It’s been hanging around in the lower reaches for ages but has had enough of a surge to get a reset on its downweighting, which helps it back into the top 40.
26. Hozier – “Do I Wanna Know”
This, on the other hand, is completely out of left field. It’s a 2016 performance for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, which was included in the deluxe edition of Hozier’s debut album. It’s an acoustic (and major key) cover of the Arctic Monkeys single that reached number 11 in 2013. It’s certainly a radically different take on the song.
34. Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Aaron Pierre & Kelvin Harrison Jr – “I Always Wanted a Brother”
This, to be fair, is not from TikTok. It’s from the soundftrack of Mufasa: The Lion King, which means it’s a Lin-Manuel Miranda song.
37. Imogen Heap – “Headlock”
Right, back to the viral back catalogue. This is a 2006 single that got to number 74 on release, but it started picking up play after being used in the game Mouthwashing last year. In a career dating back to 1998, this is the first time Imogen Heap has made the top 40 singles chart. A couple of her albums did scrape the bottom end of the album top 40, and I mean scrape: “Ellipse” got to 39 in 2009, and “Sparks” was a number 40 in 2014.
39. Sam Barber featuring Avery Anna – “Indigo”
Hey, an actual current release – though I gather it’s also pretty big on TikTok. This is the sort of country-folk that we used to class as Americana, I think. It’s the first UK hit for both of them; Barber had a hit in the US a couple of years back with “Straight and Narrow”, but he’s had no previous impact over here.
This week’s climbers:
- “Nice to Meet You” by Myles Smith climbs 13-6 to become his second top 10 hit.
- “Push 2 Start” by Tyla climbs 24-23.
- “Denial is a River” by Doechii climbs 39-31.
There are four new entries and one re-entry. The tracks dropping out are:
- “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, with two post-Christmas weeks.
- “TV Off” by Kendrick Lamar & Lefty Gunplay, also with two post-Christmas weeks. It reached number 6 as an album track in early December.
- “I Love You I’m Sorry” by Gracie Abrams, again with the two post-Christmas weeks.
- “Diet Pepsi” by Addison Rae, ditto.
- “Thick of It” by KSI featuring Trippie Redd, also ditto.
On the album chart:
1. Chappell Roan – “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”
A second week at number 1, the first having come back in August. It’s back at the top because of the release of a “crushed splatter vinyl” version which accounts for over 20% of its sales, so it’s a blip. These things are relative, though – “Rise and Fall” has been in the top 10 for 31 straight weeks.
3. Franz Ferdinand – “The Human Fear”
Franz Ferdinand were ahead in the midweeks but wind up at number 3. They shouldn’t be too disappointed with this – their last three albums reached 6 and 7, and this is their best position since 2009.
13. Bad Bunny – “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos”
His sixth album, the third to chart in this country, and the highest placing. That’s something of an achievement, because Spanish language pop doesn’t generally do well in the UK, and this is very much not a record aimed at the UK market. I mean, just listen to the track above.
16. Lambrini Girls – “Who Let the Dogs Out”
Punk duo. It’s their debut album.
