Charts – 3 January 2025
Welcome to the annual dead chart. The Christmas songs are all gone (well, aside from Tom Grennan at number 30) and a torrent of re-entries replace them, without much in the way of actual new music just yet.
1. Gracie Abrams – “That’s So True”
So, Gracie Abrams again. This was number 1 for five weeks before Christmas, spent three weeks being shunted down the chart, and now rebounds from number 21 to claim a sixth week at number 1. She also has “I Love You I’m Sorry” at 36 and “Close to You” at 37.
20. PAWSA & The Adventures of Stevie V – “Dirty Cash (Money Talks)”
This is a new entry, though it’s been floating around the lower reaches of the chart since November. PAWSA is a London producer, though he’s shown remarkable negotiating skills in getting a co-artist credit on this record, which is a fairly straight remix of the Adventures of Stevie V track which reached number 2 in 1990.
I’ve always found this track rather depressing, though to be fair, I suppose that’s kind of the point. And hey, nobody listens to verse lyrics.
The Adventures of Stevie V was basically a vehicle for producer Steve Vincent. He was from Bedfordshire; the singer on this track is Melody Washington, who was apparently working on a US air force base in the UK at the time. “Dirty Cash” was far and away his biggest UK hit, though a follow-up single “Body Language” also made it to number 29.
34. Tyla – “Push 2 Start”
This came out in November, and got a single week at number 74 for its troubles. Apparently it’s been waiting out the Christmas period and gives Tyla her third top 40 hit. The video is Significantly Unsubtle, but the track’s actually pretty good on its own merits.
And that’s your lot. There’s no point listing all of the tracks leaving the top 40 – it’s all of the Christmas tracks apart from Tom Grennan and there are tons of them. The tracks reaching new peaks are:
- “Messy” by Lola Young, which reached 7 in the week before Christmas and now rebounds to 3.
- “The Days” by Chrystal, which peaked at 24 before Christmas and now jumps to 5. It was out of the top 40 for a single week but the fact that it hung in until then shows that it was bound to do well in the new year.
And that’s it. There are no new entries on the album chart; the number one is “+ – =÷ x Tour Collection” by Ed Sheeran, which has been hanging around the top ten for all but a couple of weeks since October, but only now gets its first week at number 1. It’s his eighth number 1 album, and means that once again he has a clean sweep of number 1s for every album he’s released since “+” in 2011.
