Annotations will be at the weekend this week, for anyone checking in.

Bring on the comments

  1. Alexx Kay says:

Just wanted to give a timely heads-up: Anyone who was a fan of the X-Men back in Chris Claremont’s glory days — you HAVE to check out Avengers #21 (out today). It’s totally an issue of X-Men, guest-starring the Avengers, and it’s a banger. I want more comics like this.

  2. Krzysiek Ceran says:

Avengers #21 is not only an X-Men issue, it’s an important one – it’s the first point where it’s clear MacKay knew how Krakoa would end when he was writing it. Or at least he knew precisely how Resurrection of Magneto would end, since that’s what’s being brought up here.

…which actually was some time before the very final issues of the Krakoan Era. It might be these scripts are still from before those issues came out.

But it’s also a good week for the x-books. NYX seems to right itself after last issue missteps and even X-Force – for me the blandest team book of the current crop – was fun. MacKay’s X-Men was already fun, so it’s no surprise that continues. (Also gives me hope for the Assault of Graymalkin crossover).

I don’t know if it’s my mutant bias showing, but MacKay seems to have hit his stride on X-Men much faster than he did on Avengers, which took a long while before it became actually good. (For me it only happened in the last few issues; maybe in Blood Hunt; it suffered from event bloat, but the core mini and the Avengers issues were both pretty good).

  3. Douglas says:

I’m grateful for what you do whenever you do it!

  4. Jeff says:

What Douglas said! Thanks for all the effort you put into these things and no rush.

  5. Luis Dantas says:

    Quite so.

  6. John says:

Agreed with others on both fronts:

Thank you to Paul for continuing to keep up the outstanding quality of annotations on all the X-Books (even, or maybe especially, the ones he’s not liking)! Paul’s work makes me enjoy my weekly comics much more, and I always look forward to (and regularly check back on Thursdays and Fridays for) his takes and those of the community he cultivated.

And folks should read Avengers. Good character time for everyone, and a welcome new direction from Avengers vs X-Men that left a bad taste for so many. I would have enjoyed this book at twice as long, to give room for interactions between Cyclops and Iron Man, Storm and Magneto, Storm and Cyclops, Iron Man and Magneto… probably some other combinations too, but there’s a lot in those relationships that we didn’t get to see.
