Charts – 22 November 2024
We may be about to be hit with the Christmas deluge, but it turns out we’re getting one last surge of actual new entries before the snowfall.
1. Gracie Abrams – “That’s So True”
That’s three weeks. It has peaked, though. The top 3 is static, with “Sailor Song” at 2 and “APT” at 3.
4. Sam Fender – “People Watching”
This is the lead single (and title track) from his third album. The previous two albums both went to number 1, though, and a three year gap has done him no harm. It’s only his third top ten hit, and one of those was as a guest on a Noah Kahan single. The other was his biggest hit, “Seventeen Going Under”, which reached number 3. This one is on similar lines, although I’m fairly sure it’s the only hit single of the year to mention kittiwakes.
8. Tate McRae – “2 Hands”
This is the second single from next year’s album, and it outperforms “It’s OK I’m OK”, which only got to 14 – though it’s still around after 10 weeks, and rebounds from 36-28 this week. “2 Hands” is her fourth top 10 hit – the others were “Greedy” from the last album, “10:35” as a guest with Tiesto in 2022, and her debut hit “You Broke Me First” from 2020, which now seems like a very uncharacteristic record for her.
16. Wham! – “Last Christmas”
Oh dear. “Last Christmas” reached number 2 in 1984, when it was stuck behind Band Aid. It’s been back every year since 2011 and reached number 1 at Christmas 2020, 2022 and 2023. Last year it was number one for four weeks. God help us.
22. Linkin Park – “Two Faced”
The release week single from the album “From Zero”, which enters at number 1. It’s their eighth album and their fourth UK number one – the others are “Meteora” (2003), “Minutes to Midnight” (2007) and “Living Things” (2012). Their last studio album was in 2017, and still made the top 5. Given their genre and veteran status, they’ve been remarkably successful with the singles from this album: “The Emptiness Machine”, which peaked at 4, rebound to number 10 this week, while “Heavy is the Crown” re-enters at 21. (It peaked at 18 on release.)
24. Sabrina Carpenter – “Juno”
This is an album track that’s been floating around top 40 level for a while but has been disqualified up to now under the three song rule; “Espresso” drops below it this week, allowing it to chart. She still has “Bed Chem” at 7 and “Taste” at 12.
25. Jin – “Running Wild”
Another BTS solo project; this is a track from the EP “Happy”. It’s the first time he’s made the top 40 as a solo artist.
34. Brenda Lee – “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”
Originally a number 6 hit in 1962, this has charted every year since 2016 and reached an all time peak of number 4 at Christmas 2022. Last year, it spent four weeks in the top 10 and peaked at 5.
39. Tyler, The Creator – “Like Him”
Another album track from “Chromakopia” as they continue shuffling places. It’s the only one to make the top 40 this week.
This week’s climbers (or at least, those reaching new peaks):
- “Bad Dreams” by Teddy Swims climbs 8-6.
- “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey climbs 38-17, one place behind Wham.
The records leaving the top 40:
- “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter finally drops out under the 3-song rule. It lasted 31 weeks and had 7 weeks at number 1.
- “Labour” by Paris Paloma had a single week at number 22
- “St Chroma” by Tyler, The Creator peaked at 15 and lasted three weeks.
- “Night Changes” by One Direction had four weeks with a peak of 6 (also its all-time peak)
- “Somedays” by Sonny Fodera, Jazzy & DOD peaked at 5 and lasted 17 weeks.
- “Kisses” by Bl3ss, Camrinwatsin & Bbyclose peaked at 5 and lasted 20 weeks.
- “Austin” by Dasha re-entered at 37 last week and drops right back out.
- “The Days” by Chrystal gets a single week at 39.
- “Love Somebody” by Morgan Wallen gets a single week at 40.
On the album chart, “From Zero” by Linkin Park is number 1.
3. Flo – “Access All Areas”
Flo are a girl group who were being tipped as the next thing a couple of years ago but, at least in singles chart terms, never amounted to anything – they got one single to number 38. Their debut album finally comes out and… does alright, actually. I’m not sure why they’ve struggled so much, because the single is perfectly decent.
4. Ateez – “Golden Hour – Part 2”
A fourth top ten album for the K-pop group, although they’re actually EPs that just about scrape into the eligibiliy criteria for the album chart. This is 16 minutes long, and it’s only the physical sales that qualify for the chart – the digital download is too cheap to register as an album, which means it isn’t classed as an album for streaming purposes anyway. Fortunately for Ateez, not only do they have a loyal fan base, they’ve released this album in 20 different physical versions.
22. Shawn Mendes – “Shawn”
That’s the first time he’s missed the top 20 with an album, and the first time he’s not managed to get any singles into the top 40.
33. Iron Maiden – “Powerslave”
Reissue of their 1984 album (the fifth), which reached number 2 at the time. The lead single above reached number 11.
