Charts – 8 November 2024
Another desperately quiet week, and at this point it’s unlikely that anything else is going to break through before the Christmas flood starts. So: pretty much all you need to know about 2024 in popular music is that Chappell Roan, Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter had a breakthrough year. And maybe, on a lesser scale…
1. Gracie Abrams – “That’s So True”
This is the single from the deluxe edition of her album “The Secret of Us”. It entered at 19 two weeks ago, vaulted to number 3 last week, and now reaches number 1. By the way, it is an unquestioned number one, as it would have beaten Sabrina Carpenter even if she wasn’t subject to the downweighting rule. I’m surprised that ‘That’s So True” has jumped to number 1 this quickly, given that her previous single “I Love You I’m Sorry” – her first major hit – is still at its peak of number 4, and took nine weeks to get there. It’s a decent enough track, if very much school-of-Taylor-Swift, and I guess it’s nice to see something finally making speedy progress to the top in a chart that’s been extremely slow this year.
Speaking of which… there are only two new entries on this week’s chart.
23. The Weeknd & Anitta – “Sao Paolo”
The third single from the upcoming album, and this is certainly more of a departure from the formula. The video is… um, well, yes, it’s an image. Anitta is a big name in Brazil, but this is her first appearance on the UK charts.
The lead single from the album, “Dancing in the Flames” entered at 12 and only lasted three weeks. “Timeline” entered at 7 and has done better: it’s currently at 21 in its sixth week.
33. Tyler, The Creator – “Like Him”
Finally, another album track from “Chromakopia”, taking his third spot. “St Chroma” falls 15-16 this week, and “Darling I” falls 24-27. Oddly, the track that gets shunted out is “Noid”, the one that has a video and is being promoted as a single – it was number 16 last week but seems to have fallen off sharply.
There’s a re-entry at number 40 for “Stick Season”, which will not die. So… this week’s climbers:
- “The Door” by Teddy Swims climbs 12-8 to become his second top 10 hit in its 24th week on the top 40, and it’s not even the current single. That’s “Bad Dreams”, which climbs 25-15 this week.
- “Wildflower” by Billie Eilish climbs 18-11.
The three tracks leaving the top 40 (thanks to a re-entry for “Stick Season” at 40) are:
- “Noid” by Tyler, The Creator after a single week at 16.
- “Feelslikeimfallinginlove” by Coldplay peaked at 16 and lasted 19 weeks.
- “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan peaked at 13 and lasted 7 weeks. I’m not quite sure what’s happened with this one, since it seems to have dropped straight out of the top 100 despite not being on the chart long enough to qualify for the downweighting rule.
On the album chart, there’s just a single new entry:
1. The Cure – “Songs of a Lost World”
This has more chart points than the rest of the top 5 combined, but it’s very heavy skewed towards physical sales – only around 5% of its chart points come from streaming, which suggests it won’t be around long. The Cure’s only other number 1 album was “Wish”, in 1992, which is the one with “Friday I’m In Love” on it.
