Charts – 6 September 2024
We’re still marooned in the doldrums.
1. Sabrina Carpenter – “Taste”
Two weeks – and again, it heads up an all-Sabrina top three, with “Please Please Please” at number 2 and “Espresso” at number 3. The album “Short N’ Sweet” drops to 2.
31. Coldplay – “We Pray”
Your highest new entry, climbing from number 44. I realise there’s a bunch of “featuring” credits on the video, but the official chart credit is just for Coldplay. This is the second single from their current album “Moon Music”. It’s an odd track – it’s one of the more interesting Coldplay tracks I’ve heard in a while, but Chris Martin’s voice somehow makes it sound like Maroon 5. Still, two top 40 hits from an album at this point in their career is a good result.
That’s it. That’s the only new entry. There’s a re-entry at 39 for Kid Laroi’s “Nights Like This”, and poor Alex Warren climbs from 42-41.
This week’s climbers:
- “Live Forever” by Oasis climbs 19-8. It only got to number 10 on release, so this is a new peak. Middle aged people are still tremendously excited at the thought that the 1990s are coming back, apparently.
- “Don’t Look Back in Anger” by Oasis climbs 16-9. You see my point.
- “Wonderwall” by Oasis climbs 17-11. *Sigh*
- “Sailor Song” by Gigi Perez climbs 35-24. This is at least a decent climb for a track that entered only two weeks ago.
- “I Love You I’m Sorry” by Gracie Abrams climbs 38-25 in its fourth week in the top 40, finally giving her a top 30 single.
The two tracks leaving the top 40 are:
- “Guy For That” by Post Malone featuring Luke Combs, a comparatively minor single from his current album, which lasted five weeks and peaked at 25.
- “360” by Charli XCX, which peaked at 11 and lasted 12 weeks.
“Stick Season” by Noah Kahan remains the longest running track in the top 40, at 48 weeks and counting. It’s a non-mover at number 37. Could it hang on for 52 weeks? At this rate of chart turnover, yes.
The album chart isn’t much busier, to be honest.
1. Oasis – “Definitely Maybe”
Which includes “Live Forever”. This spent a single week at number 1 on release in September 1994, and now returns to number 1 after a 30 year gap. It re-entered at number 5 last week but it’s evidently going nowhere. “Time Flies – 1994-2009” is number 3 and “What’s the Story Morning Glory” is number 4. There’s a huge gap between them and the other Oasis albums – “The Masterplan” is at 41, and “Be Here Now” is 42.
5. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – “Wild God”
Yes, that’s the whole album in that video. Their previous studio album was 2019’s “Ghosteen”, which was number 4.
6. Wunderhorse – “Midas”
Their second album, the first to chart. Never heard of them, to be honest, but I like this track.
38. Palaye Royale – “Death or Glory”
And finally, the fifth studio album by Las Vegas band Palaye Royale; its predecessor from 2022 was their first album to chart in the UK, reaching number 37.
