House To Astonish – Podcast Update

Posted on Friday, August 26, 2011 by Al in Podcast

Hey folks. Quick bit of news about stuff that’s been going on behind the scenes with the podcast – we’re in the process of moving from Podomatic to Libsyn, and it’s all been a bit of a nightmare. In order to keep our current “store front” on iTunes, we would have to insert a particular tag in the XML of our RSS feed – all very simple, if you’re with a podcast provider who lets you do things like tinker with the XML of your own RSS feed. Sadly, Podomatic are not one of those providers, and they’re not prepared to do it for us (well, I presume they’re not – it’s been six days since they last emailed me back, despite me chasing them up…).

The upshot of this is that we’re probably going to have to have our existing presence on iTunes deleted, and a new iteration of the podcast started up on there. This of course means that if you’re a subscriber, then you’ll need to go on there and subscribe again.

There won’t be an episode this week, for a variety of reasons (most of which are related to Podomatic), but we’re hoping to have an episode up online next weekend, so we’ll let you know at that point what to go looking for on iTunes.

Cheers for bearing with us. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

EDIT:  Well, that seems to have got someone’s attention. We may not need to start over after all. Stay tuned for further developments this week.

  1. So does the iTunes reboot mean a renumbering of the podcast? You could go back to #1 to fit in with DC! Or by Marvel maths you’ve surely reached HtA #600 by now.

  2. Paul O'Regan says:

If you can, you should probably try to put out a quick audio update on the old feed to tell people to switch over, for those who don’t check the site.

  3. Al says:

Martin: We’re the secret 53rd title.

Paul: Way ahead of you 😉 It’s not showed up on iTunes yet but it should do soon (hopefully). I’ve also put it out there on Twitter and will do the same on the Facebook page.

  4. Weblaus says:

It’s on there now, at least I got it when I refreshed my subscribed podcast.

Quick note: The short version of your jingle sounds terrible… ugh. Back to medium length on the next full podcast, please.

  5. Joe S. Walker says:

There is a longer version of the theme tune – it turned up recently on an Italian bondage video. Most disconcerting.

  6. Thomas says:

When Derrick and I started BETTER IN THE DARK, we were on Podomatic…and that service was a nightmare from beginning to end. I’m so glad we ultimately got picked up by the Earth-2 Syndicate of podcasts, as I no longer have to deal with a podcast hosting service.

I’d recommend uploading a back-up of your episodes to archives.org. It’s free, and will give you someplace to point fans if libsyn does go down (which it did once or twice during the two years we used it after becoming thoroughly disgusted with podomatic).

  7. Paul says:

I’d just like to point out that next week is arguably a more newsworthy week to be podcasting anyway, so this is probably for the best…

I’ll save you the trouble of reviewing Justice League #1: as a Geoff Johns DC superhero comic, it’s passable, if that’s what you like. As an Inspiring New Direction and Flagship, it is an unmitigated disaster. No interesting conflict or mystery, the villain is boring, and the only thing that seems to excite Jim Lee is drawing Green Lantern’s big green fire engines.

I know that Paul, in particular, was no huge fan of Morrison’s JLA, but something like that would have been infinitely better; it set up a conflict and introduced all the characters. This just has Batman and Green Lantern, with a Superman cameo at the end which is in the style of a Big Reveal. (Superman???!!! In the JLA???!!! Surely not!) I admit that the Cyborg origin stuff adds a bit of interest as at least something different.
