Charts – 10 August 2014
There weren’t any X-books to review this week, hence no reviews. I was thinking of doing the first six issues of Moon Knight instead but, well, I haven’t had time to write it. Maybe later in the week.
Meanwhile, here’s a very dull chart.
40. Maroon 5 – “It Was Always You”
No video for this, and it’s not officially on YouTube as an audio either (not that you’ll have any trouble finding it there). This is a trailer single for their upcoming album “V”, and since it’s not a fully promoted single in its own right, they have an excuse for the chart position. It was at 25 in the midweeks, which presumably means all the fans bought it at the start of the week – who knew there were so many Maroon 5 fans?
34. Jessie Ware – “Tough Love”
Oh, now this is good. It’s the top 40 debut for Jessie Ware, but her previous album “Devotion” got to number 5 and got nominated for the Mercury Music Prize; the highest placing single from that album got to number 41. This is the title track from her upcoming second album, and it’s not a track that’s feels obviously targeted to radio, so I doubt anyone was particularly going for a high chart placing here to start with. But she’s built up an audience that was enough to get it to 22 in the midweeks.
31. Bars & Melody – “Hopeful”
Down 26 places in their second week – not exactly a good sign for a future music career. Of some minor interest, it’s worth noting that their high first week sales featured an unusually high proportion of CD singles. Apparently this is because they did a tour of appearances in the HMV chain and were pushing people to buy the single in store. It seems to have been unexpectedly successful, and it’ll be interesting to see if Simon Cowell (or anyone else) tries this trick again.
23. Ed Sheeran – “Don’t”
One of the Ed Sheeran tracks that’s been floating around the chart ever since his album came out, and peaked at number 17 over a month ago. But it’s now been promoted to a proper single, and it rebounds 12 places this week, presumably thanks to the release of the video. Sheeran insists that, contrary to rumour, the song isn’t about Taylor Swift.
3. OneRepublic – “Love Runs Out”
One of the bonus tracks from the reissue of last year’s “Native” album. It’s a bit of a stomper, at least by OneRepublic’s standards. As usual with OneRepublic, taken on it’s own terms it’s a good pop single.
1. Nico & Vinz – “Am I Wrong”
Norwegian afrobeat. “Am I Wrong” was a hit across Scandinavia last year, at which point the band were called Envy. That got them signed by Warner Brothers for international releases, who apparently pointed out that there were rather a lot of acts already called Envy or something similar – hence the rather uninspired rebranding as Nico & Vinz. This looks to have a decent shot of holding on for a second week, with none of this week’s new releases placing above 3 on iTunes right now.
On the album chart:
- “X” by Ed Sheeran spends a seventh week at number 1.
- “Long Road Home” by Charlie Simpson is the highest new entry at number 10. This is the second solo album for the former Busted member, who went on to reinvent himself as an alt-rock act via a stint with his band Fightstar. His previous album “Young Pilgrim” got to 6. Single: “Haunted”.
- “Pixie Lott” by Pixie Lott at 15. The single “Nasty” got to 9 in March; a follow-up “Lay Me Down” apparently came out at the end of July and bombed spectacularly, missing the top 100.
- “Don’t Kill the Magic” by Magic! at 19. The single drops to 2.
